Seniors! Better Safe Than Sorry When it Comes to Graduation Day

As the 2017-2018 school year draws nearer to graduation, Mission Vista is starting to hold its senior events. Required in order to walk at graduation, the events include meetings, senior breakfast, graduation rehearsal, and senior survey. Class panorama, and awards night are optional events.

Recently, talk has erupted around campus over the fairness of having to attend the senior events. Questions have arisen: Do you have to attend all of them? What if you get sick and can't come to school on the day of an event? Is being barred from walking at graduation too big of a punishment for not showing up to a senior event?

Graduating senior, Kelly Katsama, gave us some insight on the student’s point of view.

When asked if she thinks seniors should be required to attend the events, Katsama says “Yes, because it’s information we need to know, but I think them being mandatory is a bit ridiculous. If they're giving us new information then fine, but honestly if its repetitive then we shouldn't have to go to senior meetings.” Kelly did, however, admit to not knowing about everything the school had going on.

One event Katsama has no problem attending is senior breakfast. “Well, senior breakfast is a school day,” Kelly admitted, adding, “It being mandatory makes sense. Also, there's like, free food, so that's lit.”

Megan Klentschy, an ASB and Link Crew member, says that it all “depends on what is being said at the meeting. Information can be relayed by students, but only the presenters can tell you exactly how important what they're saying is. This being said, not being able to walk at graduation is a little extreme.”

Although debate continues as to how harsh the requirements are, one thing is certain: seniors that want to guarantee that they'll be marching on graduation day should attend all scheduled events. Better to play it safe than to miss out on a once in a lifetime event!
