A Farewell From Our President

My Fellow Timberwolves,

Over these past nine months our student body has continued to propel itself forward. Serving as your president has instilled in me an abiding faith in all that it means to be a Timberwolf.

In the past year, you have excelled on so many different levels. Whether it be in the classroom, on the canvas, a stage, the court, a field or a journal, you have displayed your amazing ability to excel in a diverse range of fields. You have brought to light what has happened and needs to happen our campus and in our world. You have persevered through challenges while opening yourself to the struggles of others. You have reached out to our community and have dedicated hour upon hour to making a positive difference.

Of course, we are not without faults. The unique promises of our school are evident, but not self-enforcing. No matter who we are or what we are involved in on campus we must remember that this is our school, this is a part of our lives. Know your rights. Do not silence yourself. Question authority, challenge the status quo. Fear only apathy, not activism. Speech on student issues must be overseen by only one body: students. Do not hesitate to speak truth to “power” because real power is derived from the student. It's up to all of us to ensure that we are heard and respected by the very institutions we are obligated to follow.

We stand at the precipice of change in our school. The departure of myself and 418 (or maybe 419) of my fellow Seniors signals the end of an era and the beginning a new chapter in the Mission Vista. New changes are inevitable. Change is not something that can be crumpled up and stopped, change is a constant. Who wields the power of change is up to us. Change does not come by a single person, not even a President, but when the people collectively push in a new direction. We all have a stake in this change, don't not be afraid to take the first step towards it.

Our school needs you! I need you to believe, not necessarily in Admin’s or ASB’s ability to bring about change, but more importantly, in yours. Invest in your passions, but take a moment to look beyond your own interest and reach out to another person, class, or department. We are a diverse pack, but this is a place where I have experienced firsthand that there is far more that unites us than divides us. We are interconnected not simply by a name, a school color or even an alma mater, but by the very fabric our our collective character. We are inclusive. We are cooperative. We are powerful. We are change makers. We are Timberwolves.

My time as President is up, but I know our wolfpack will rise to even greater heights. It has been the honor of my life to serve as your President.

Thank you for the classes, the amazing concerts, the incredible plays and musicals, the club carnivals, the coffee houses, the exciting pep rallies, the rocking rock the hills, the fall fests, the sporting events, the live changing TED talks, the 3D art timberwolf, the endurance building 5k’s, the ASB Retreats, the times you said “Mr. President” when you never needed, the moments when you understood why I couldn't disclose the prom theme, the time when you let me help finish the yearbook, the four years you were the best mentor anyone could ever ask for, the times you believed in me when I did not fully believe in myself.

Thank you Mission Vista.

Oh, And remember Timberwolves, Be the Change.

Sincerely,

Nathan Mizell

ASB President
